Merlot is well-suited to the Hawke's Bay climate, and is consequently the most-planted variety in the region. This fruit came from our Matau vineyard, and the 2014 season was a good one here - plenty of classic merlot varietal characters on display.
To balance the primary fruit and make a more complex wine, a portion of this batch was given extended time on yeast lees, developing characteristic biscuity flavours, and a small percentage of long-macerated malbec was used to donate a little spice and some complementary fruit notes.
89 cases produced. Drinking pretty damn well now, but still a fair way from its peak yet, patience, patience.
